# What does consent mean for contacting someone?

Consent means a person has clearly agreed to be contacted for a stated purpose, and having their email or phone number is not the same thing.

By Invenitor team. Updated 2026-11-01.

## Does having a number mean you can message it?

No. WhatsApp's business policy, for example, says you may only contact people if they gave you their number and you received opt-in permission ([WhatsApp Business policy](https://whatsappbusiness.com/policy/)). Treat a contact detail as a way to ask, not as permission.

## What does this look like in practice?

Write one person at a time, explain why you chose them, and ask whether they want to hear more. If they say no, stop and record it.
