# What is data decay in contact lists?

Data decay is the way a contact list goes out of date over time as people change roles, change companies and close old mailboxes.

By Invenitor team. Updated 2026-11-01.

## How can you tell a list has decayed?

Bounces rise, and replies start saying "I left that company". You will often see this first in lists bought or exported long ago.

## What should you do with an old list?

Do not send to all of it. Send to a small part first and look at the result. Then refresh the people who still matter, one at a time, and retire the rest.
