People search for journalists: find sources who were in the room

Journalists use Invenitor to find sources by describing what they did, such as former staff of a company or people in a role, and then reach them directly.

By Invenitor team. Updated .

What might you search for?

  • Former compliance staff at Indian payment companies
  • Nurses who worked at private hospitals in Kerala
  • Researchers studying groundwater in Rajasthan

How does a description help with sources?

Your source is often someone whose name you do not know yet. You know what they did: they worked in that department, or studied that subject. A description gets you to a list of names to check.

What should you check before you rely on a source?

Confirm what they claim independently. A role on a profile is a claim, not proof. Ask for documents or a second person who was there.

How should you protect people?

Do not tell one source who else you contacted. For a sensitive story, offer a secure channel in your first note. And remember that the person did not ask to be contacted, so make it easy to say no.

Will the person know how I found them?
Not from Invenitor, which does not contact anyone. They may ask you, so have an honest answer ready.
Can I use this if I freelance and have no company?
