Finding people
How to find someone's work phone number
To find someone's work phone number, start with their company's site and front desk, then ask a mutual contact, and use a contact tool when you need a direct line.

Should you be calling at all?
Ask this first. A phone call interrupts, and people tend to judge a stranger's call by that interruption. An email can wait until the person is ready. A call cannot. So save the phone for when it adds something: an urgent, specific question, a follow-up after a message that was read, or a business that runs on phone calls, such as a clinic, a workshop or a shop.
In many Indian small businesses, the phone is the normal way to reach an owner, and an email may never be read. In a large company, a call to someone's own mobile from a stranger is often unwelcome. Match the channel to the person.
Where do you find a phone number without a tool?
Most people do not publish a personal number, but businesses publish theirs. Try these first:
- The company's contact page, including branch and regional office pages.
- Its map listing. Local businesses often keep a number current there, and reviews sometimes show whether it is answered.
- Invoices, proposals and email signatures from anyone you have already dealt with.
- Trade directories and industry association member lists.
- Event pages. Organisers sometimes list a coordinator's number.
- The person's own site, if they are a consultant or a freelancer.
A front desk number is not a failure. It is often the best route. Ask for the person by role, and say in one sentence why you are calling. See what a gatekeeper is and how to work with one.
When is a direct number worth paying for?
A direct number is worth paying for when you already know this person is the right one, and when a call is a normal way to do business in their world. Sales calls to a known account, an urgent question for a supplier, or a follow-up with someone who has asked you to call are good reasons.
Tools price phones very differently, so check before you buy. Lusha lists a phone at 5 credits against 1 for an email (Lusha pricing). Apollo's API table adds 8 credits when a mobile number is returned (Apollo API pricing). On Invenitor a contact is 1 credit (₹2) whether you get an email, a phone or both, and it is charged only when one comes back.
Do not assume you will always get one. People publish phones far less often than emails, so expect some people to return an email only, or nothing.
What rules apply to calls and messages in India?
Finding a number does not give you the right to market to it. Some rules are worth knowing, and guides written for US readers usually skip them.
TRAI regulates unsolicited commercial communication. Its directions say promotional robocalls and auto-dialler calls should go through 140-series numbers. Unregistered senders face warnings, a usage cap of twenty outgoing calls and twenty messages a day, and disconnection for repeat violations, under its 2025 regulation. People can report spam by calling or texting 1909.
WhatsApp is stricter than many assume. Its business policy says you may only contact people if they gave you their number and you received opt-in permission (WhatsApp Business policy). A number you found is not opt-in.
Invenitor's Terms prohibit using data for unconsented electronic marketing, telemarketing or automated outreach. One considered call about a specific question is very different from dialling a list. This is general information, not legal advice. Read more in the rules guide.
How do you make the call go well?
A stranger's call succeeds or fails in its first ten seconds. Keep to this order:
- Say your name and why you chose them, specifically.
- Ask whether now is a bad time. Most people respect being asked.
- State your one question.
- If they are busy, ask when to call back or where to send a note.
- If they say no, thank them, stop, and record it so nobody calls again.
Call in normal working hours in their time zone, and do not call repeatedly. If you have not spoken before, a short message first saying you plan to call can help, if the person has given you a way to send one. Then write down what you learned, because a good call often gives you the name of a better person to speak to.
Common questions
- Why do tools return a phone less often than an email?
- People publish work email addresses much more often than phone numbers. Expect fewer phones in any tool, whatever it promises.
- Can I message a number on WhatsApp if I found it?
- WhatsApp's business policy requires that the person gave you their number and opted in. Treat a found number as a way to ask by other means, not as permission.
